BRIA LOADED UP THE sleek black Jaguar with shoes, bags, and all the clothing she could fit in the backseat and headed to Sacramento. She saw no need to stay in the condo she couldnât afford. Pabloâs plans were to remove all of the furniture by the end of the week anyway, and she didnât want to spend the next month in an empty living space, staring at the walls. Home was the only place for her to go.
Initially, when she left Endurance, sheâd flown to New York, hoping to break into the stage play industry or modeling. Hours of cardio, running, and Pilates had returned her figure after giving birth to the squalling child that she refused to breastfeed. The boy was not going to tug on her breast with his hungry little mouth, dragging her boobs down to her belly. There was a limit to everything. Evidently, her husband had reached his with her. She was shocked when the divorce papers arrived a week after her clothes showed up in an old fish box. Everything in it reeked to high heaven with the scent of cod that would not come out no matter how much fabric refreshers she used and frequent washings. All the fishy smelling underwear had to be thrown out.
The move by Chadwick was a screw you if sheâd ever seen one. Bria was impressed with the balls of the man, although three years of marriage to him didnât give her many indications that he would make such a bold move. âIt was probably his motherâs doing,â Bria mumbled as she made her way into the gated community where her parents resided.
At the entry gate, she entered her password, but it didnât register. The flashing red dots indicated she wasnât welcome, but that didnât deter her. She tried it again, only to have security pull up behind her in the drive, questioning whether she belonged.
âThis is my parentsâ home,â she told the burly, bearded, broad-chested brute who got out of his car.
âThat may be, maâam,â he told her, âBut you have no security access to this home.â
âI donât believe this malarky,â she said to him, pulling out her phone. She dialed her motherâs number, listening to the rings. Lana Cayes answered on the fourth chime. âMom, I am at the front gate. Can you please buzz me in?â
âBria? What can I help you with?â
âI am your daughter. Open the bleeping gate, so I can come in,â Bria said.
Her motherâs pause nearly hurt her feelings, if she had any other than mild irritation at the woman whoâd given birth to her. She was more pissed at the security guard calling her maâam than anything and this just added more fuel to her smoldering fire. The gate opened slowly as she put the car in drive, flipping a bird to the security guard.
The house had not changed at all over the years, and it made her itch from her head to her toes to be back in the homestead.
